Multivitamins for women

Women have a higher need for iron than men due to blood loss during menstruation. The recommended daily intake of iron for women aged 22 to 50 is 15 mg (for men, it is 11 mg per day). Multivitamins for women typically contain a higher dose of iron, sometimes exceeding the aforementioned 15 mg.

Well-known multivitamins for women include Orthica's Strata Fem and Solgar's Female Multiple. The Female Multiple provides an impressive 400 mg of calcium, 400 mg of magnesium, and 18 mg of iron per daily dose of 3 tablets, in the highly absorbable form of iron bisglycinate.

Multivitamins for women in menopause usually contain a lower amount of iron or none at all, and typically have higher doses of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, and vitamin D. Sometimes, these multivitamins also include a complex of isoflavones and extracts from, for example, black cohosh.

A well-known example is Solgar's VM-Prime for Women, which delivers 300 mg of calcium, 150 mg of magnesium, 25 micrograms of vitamin D, and 45 micrograms of vitamin K per daily dose of 3 tablets.

Most multivitamins on this page are aimed at women in general. For multivitamins and other dietary supplements specifically for women during and after menopause, see: Multi 45+.
