Probiotics for infants and young children

In our intestines, colonies of various bacterial strains reside, known as gut flora. Every person acquires these bacteria through sources such as yoghurt and quark. A baby receives its first strains through the birth canal and the mother’s nipples.

Some bacterial strains are particularly suited for the sensitive intestinal lining of infants. Other strains, such as the well-known Lactobacillus acidophilus, are appropriate for slightly older children, approximately from the time of weaning.

Probiotics & Other Important Information

This page provides an overview of probiotics for infants and young children. Older children (from about 7 years old) can safely use adult probiotics.

Some of these products are suitable from birth (Microbiol Child 0-4 yearsBacteri 5 Infantis), or two weeks later (Orthiflor Start).

Please note: the well-known product ABC Dophilus from Solgar has been permanently discontinued since early 2016. The product that is most similar in composition is Orthica's Orthiflor Start.

Probiotics are completely safe in the recommended amounts, and overdosing is virtually impossible. However, it may occur that during the first week of use, changes in stool may happen, or, for instance, gas formation and an increase in intestinal cramps. Usually, these symptoms disappear after about 5 days of use.

If complaints persist for a longer period, please consult your GP or midwife in a timely manner.

Probiotics can be dissolved in a bottle of water or (expressed) milk, or for example, mixed with a fruit puree. In the case of breastfeeding, half a teaspoon of powder can be mixed with a few drops of water to form a paste, which can then be applied to the nipples or directly into your child's mouth.

Probiotics are not laxatives. They should be viewed as support for the normal, natural gut flora. Therefore, it is advisable to finish a pack completely, even if it seems no longer necessary.

Probiotics often contain maltodextrin as a carrier. This is a minuscule amount that does not affect blood sugar levels per serving. If you would like a probiotic without maltodextrin, you might consider Vital's Microbiol Child 0-4 years drops.

Note: powders are sensitive to moisture. Therefore, ensure that the pot is opened only in a dry area and with dry hands. After exposure to moisture, the powder can turn into a hard lump, and the quality will deteriorate quickly. Therefore, it is best to use a pot of powder within a few weeks.
