Omega 3 child: fish oil for children
Fish is a good source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Many experts recommend starting to take extra fish oil during pregnancy, and also throughout childhood via liquid supplements and chewable capsules to provide additional DHA and/or EPA.
The advantage of fish oil from dietary supplements is that it is carefully purified and strictly monitored for contaminants such as heavy metals. Such products are therefore safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
On this page, you will find all our fish oil products that are suitable for young children (up to around 7 years) and older children. Chewable capsules and chewable tablets are only suitable for children aged 3 and above due to the risk of choking. However, the contents of the capsules are suitable for all ages. You can carefully open these types of capsules with clean scissors and mix the oil with some food. Children aged 12 and over can use adult fish oil capsules.
Most supplements for children up to around 7 years contain mainly DHA, while supplements for older children primarily contain EPA. DHA is a component of brain cells, and the brain is still growing significantly until the age of 7.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) states: "DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and the maintenance of normal brain function. This beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA."
