Arginine

L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid as we can synthesise arginine from glutamine, glutamic acid, and proline. Our daily diet includes various sources of arginine, such as dairy, fish, meat, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), urea, and ornithine. It is necessary for the body’s own synthesis of creatine and can also be utilised for the formation of citrulline. Therefore, it plays an important role in the so-called urea cycle.

Dietary supplements containing L-arginine are best taken on an empty stomach. Most supplements contain 500 mg of arginine per capsule.

Through our diet, we typically consume about 4,400 mg of arginine daily. Most clinical studies have been conducted with dosages ranging from 7,000 to 15,000 mg per day.
