Antioxidants are nutrients that protect our bodies from oxidative damage caused by factors such as UV radiation, toxins, and oxygen. Antioxidants can neutralise so-called "free radicals". Free radicals are reactive particles that form in our bodies as by-products of metabolism and fat burning. External factors like smoking, pollution, pesticides, and radiation can increase the production of free radicals. Due to their high reactivity, they can damage cells and tissues. Various types of nutrients can have antioxidant effects, including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and (bio)flavonoids. (Bio)flavonoids are a broad group of plant compounds that contribute significantly to the vibrant colours of many fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Well-known antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium. Want to know more? Read all about antioxidants here.
