FAQ
What should you look out for when choosing a magnesium supplement?
When choosing a magnesium supplement, there are a few things to consider:
- The form of magnesium → ideally choose a form that is well absorbed
- Composition → check whether supportive nutrients have been added, such as vitamin B6
- Dosage → tailored to your needs
- Format → capsules, tablets or powder, whichever suits you
- Quality → choose a trusted brand with carefully formulated products
This way, you can make a choice that fits your body and routine.
Which form of magnesium is best to choose?
That depends on your needs. Not every form of magnesium is absorbed equally well or used for the same purpose.
- Magnesium citrate → often chosen to support energy levels and muscles
- Magnesium bisglycinate → popular with athletes and for broader support
- Magnesium taurate → aimed at supporting the nervous system and mood
- Magnesium malate → often used to support fatigue
Not sure? Then a magnesium complex – a combination of several forms – can be a good choice.
How much magnesium do you need per day?
How much magnesium you need varies from person to person. For adults, the recommended daily amount is around 300 mg for women and 350 mg for men.
Are you taking magnesium as a supplement? In that case, people often choose:
- 100–200 mg per day as a daily baseline
- 200–400 mg per day when you want to give your body extra support, for example during sport or busy periods
What exactly does magnesium do in your body?
Magnesium is involved in more than 300 processes in your body. Among other things, it supports the muscles, helps to reduce tiredness and contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system. It also plays a role in energy metabolism and helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. A small mineral with a wide-ranging role, in other words.
How do I know if I’m getting enough vitamin D?
Requirements vary from person to person. If you’re unsure, you can ask a doctor to check your vitamin D status.
What forms of vitamin D are there?
Vitamin D is available as tablets, capsules, drops and chewable tablets. Drops are convenient for children or for anyone who has difficulty swallowing.
What is the difference between vitamin D2 and D3?
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the most readily absorbed form of vitamin D and is the one most commonly used in food supplements.
Is 75 micrograms of vitamin D a high dose?
Yes, 75 micrograms is considered a higher daily dose. This amount remains below the maximum safe intake of 100 micrograms per day for adults as set by the EFSA. If you plan to use it long term or if you are unsure, it may be sensible to consult a doctor or qualified professional.
